Pilates, Run, Eat, Bake

Happy Thursday! Or in my case – FRIDAY! :)

Sorry I’ll stop rubbing it in now.

Boyfriend and I are heading up to Tahoe with a few friends for a weekend of sun, Chambers punch, hiking, lake-ing, and relaxation. Can’t even wait.

This morning started out, once again, in the 5am hour.

After another vicious mosquito attack (boyfriend was the victim this time) around 3am (seriously how are they getting into our apartment?! And where is it hiding exactly?), the 5:15 alarm came way, way too quickly.

I hustled to get to the studio, taught the 6:20 and 7:10am class, and then hustled right home to inhale my breakfast. Breakfast was a standard yogurt bowl (yogurt, berries, almond butter, granola)… with a twist.

Homemade Cinnamon Roll Granola.

Cassie you are a genius.

I followed the recipe almost exactly – the only change I made was subbing the 3T of oil for 3T of unsweetened applesauce. Honestly I couldn’t tell a difference. Oh also, I didn’t make the glaze, but chalk that up to pure laziness.

I immediately inhaled about 3 handfuls upon taking it out of the oven and I was more than a little generous in dishing it out into my yogurt bowl this morning.

Joking. But I definitely got heavy handed.

After breakfast, and dropping boyfriend at work (I try to spare him the horrors of public transportation whenever possible), I headed to the gym with the intention of running give or take 5 miles. I finished Gone Girl (excellent book, not a fan of the ending), around mile 4, and started By Invitation Only, about the founders of Gilt Groupe. SO GOOD SO FAR. Did you know they both went to Harvard undergrad and Harvard Business School? And that one of them had a hand in launching/starting eBay Canada and eBay Motors? I most definitely did not.

The book is so good that I stayed on the treadmill for 6 more miles. Ending just shy of the 90 minute mark with 10 miles under my belt. 30 miles thus far for the week. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get any miles in while in Tahoe so I wanted to get to at least 30 miles before we head up. I figure I can maybe squeeze in an hour run when we get home on Sunday, but if not… we’ll just consider this a step-back week. ;-)

I met boyfriend and the Whole Foods hot bar for lunch, and then ran some errands before coming home and making Brown Butter White Chocolate Pretzel Blondies (again Cassie you are brilliant) to bring up to Tahoe with us.

These are in no way healthy, nor are they in any way gluten-free. But they smell so darn good, I’ll be sacrificing a wee bit of gluten to enjoy one (or four) of these babies over the weekend.

Whole Foods Finds

It’s baaaaack! If you haven’t checked out the previous finds you can do so here and here.

While at Whole Foods today… a few new discoveries happened.

Agave Sticks

Remember honey sticks when you were younger? Think those… only filled with agave. For under $2. Yes please.

(And yes, they do also carry honey sticks, and yes they taste just like they did when you were 11 years old.)

Annie’s Fruit Snacks

I’ll be real – this is the third box/flavor we’ve gone through. These things are so freaking good. It all started when I started taking gummy vitamins (do not judge me), and I started sneaking ~3 a day instead of the recommended 2. (And going against the recommendation of “do not take more than advised”. Woops.)

Boyfriend brought home the all-natural, organic, sweetened with fruit juice fruit snacks.

And we’ve never looked back.

With that, I’m off to teach one last class of the day then head up to Tahoe!

Have a lovely weekend everyone :)

Favorites As of Late…

Happy Friday! Hope you have a great weekend in store. This post was supposed to go up this morning post-7.5 mile trail run, but due to a “service outage” in the area (thanks Comcast, I bet that doesn’t happen to DirecTV customers), I was without cable/internet for the better part of the day.

Luckily that just meant a Whole Foods hot bar lunch date with boyfriend, torturing myself at the SPCA (was it black labrador day there or something? SERIOUSLY), and scoring some new finds at Sports Basement for me. We have some friends in town tonight, the Giant’s game tomorrow, and some Escape from Alcatraz spectating/celebrating with friends participating on Sunday. Should be a great weekend!

I thought I’d bring back the old Friday Favorites… revamped.

What are some of your favorites of late?

Some favorites as of late:

Fresh cocktails.

Ever since eating at Starlite in San Diego and trying my first mule, I’ve been completely and utterly in love. This is the most refreshing and delicious cocktail I’ve ever had. The copper mug is essential. It keeps the drink freezing cold. And makes it a lot more fun to drink.

Fresh flowers.

Last week’s blooms were a hydrangea and lilac bouquet and sun beams from Trader Joes. This week? Gorgeous hot pink Peonies (my FAVORITE!) from Costco of all places. Borderline addiction to fresh flowers.

Homemade Gluten-Free Pizza.

Just because the gluten was halted, doesn’t mean my love for homemade pizza had to be! I’ve been buying the Bob’s Red Mill brand and I love it. It’s so good, and if you didn’t tell me it was gluten-free I probably wouldn’t know. But I also have an unnatural love for pizza so take what you will out of that.

Brooks Pure Flows

Now there’s a big surprise.

Other People’s Pets

Again, big shock. Boyfriend and I puppy-sat our friend Ali’s adorable Corgi Puddles yesterday. And suffice it to say we are completely in love and need our own. ASAP.

The golden? I have no idea who owns him but we bonded on the street. Then I hugged him. The bulldog? Again, no idea but his name was Walker and he was sitting outside a sign that said 2-drink minimum. It’s a requirement to take a picture of that.

Running Gear/Fuel

Surprise, surprise. Shopping + running all rolled into one.

After trying Nuun after  particularly trying 7.5 mile trail run this morning with Jaime, I was sold. Also this Raw Crunch bar Jaime had on hand. Amazing. 150 calories. Real food. SO tasty.

I immediately picked up 3 tubes of Nuun. I clearly don’t fuel correctly on my training runs (1 Gu on a long run, regardless of distance, water only at water fountains so I’m changing it up this year – Nuun Water Bottles, honey packets, ShotBloks). Sports Basement in SOMA was also carrying Lauren Fleishman’s Picky Bars (Gluten-Free! Woo Hoo!), which I’ve been wanting to try. Lastly, my trusty black, Nike DriFit hat that faithfully served me every run of the way through last year’s marathon training bit the dust (the velcro stopped velcro-ing), so it was time for version 2.0. Serve me well my friend. (The Builders Bars are boyfriends – Vanilla Almond is not an easy flavor to find anywhere.)

And the Two Degrees bars are not a new find, but they are a favorite. Think of them as the Tom’s of all-natural bars – they feed a child with every bar purchased. They’re Vegan, Gluten-Free, and based in SF too.

Friday Afternoon Happy Hour

Give me some Gruyère, fresh parmesan, fruit, chips, hummus and fresh cocktails (the agave, lime juice, tequila margaritas mentioned in this post are being made as we speak – thanks boyfriend!) and I’m a very happy girl.

Have a great weekend! If you’re racing – good luck! If you’re doing Escape – GREAT luck! That sand ladder killed me today and I hadn’t just swam in from Alcatraz and biked around the city.

Whole Foods Finds – Part 1

Is it just me, or do you always find something “ohmygod so cool, I need this, I don’t care if it costs me a whole paycheck” whenever you walk into Whole Foods?

This happens to me about 7-8 times per shopping trip. It honestly seems like they are always stocking something new, healthy, and ridiculously delicious for me to spend $17 on.

And I do. Eagerly.

I know Whole Foods across the country stock different items (depending on where you live) but I thought it would be fun to start a “Whole Foods Finds” series, of the “ohmygod so cool, I need this, I don’t care if it costs me a whole paycheck” items that I’ve come across.

Who knows, maybe you’ll find something new to try!

Hope Hummus Sweet Potato Hummus

Just try this – it’s ridiculous. I’ve been on a slight sweet potato obsession/addiction and this just adds to fuel to my Sweet Potato fire. I’m also dying to try the spicy avocado. I picture it as a spicy guac of sorts. More flavors here.

Lara Bar Cappucino

I realize this is a common find but I kid you not I haven’t been able to find the new flavor anywhere. FYI – SOMA Whole Foods carries it – buy in bulk. You’ll regret it if you don’t. I felt like I was eating an espresso.

Inka Corn Peruvian Corn Nuts

Without a doubt the most addicting snack in the world. Boyfriend discovered these recently, and brought home a bag last night for me to try. Between the two of us, the bag was emptied in about 31 minutes. Do not skimp on the Salt & Vinegar and buy original. You want the Salt and the Vinegar… trust me on this one.

What are you favorite Whole Foods find recently?

It’s OK if they’re local to your area, I’ll just be jealous of your delicious finds, and then repeatedly and obsessively ask you to mail me some :)
